ERM Power’s Wellington gas pipeline route feasibility process continues

September 28, 2009

ERM Power is looking to build an alternative gas pipeline to its proposed Wellington Power Station.

The alternative pipeline would come directly from Young instead of Alectown and ERM’s land agents have been discussing the alignment with affected landowners.

Young is a major gas hub and a direct connection would secure supplies for the future development of the power station as well as providing the first link in an interstate gas pipeline to Queensland.

This week ERM is holding public exhibitions of its proposal at Wellington, Molong, and Cowra.

ERM Power’s NSW Director, Andy Pittlik said that gas-fired generation is the best solution for making deep cuts in CO2 emissions at an affordable price.

“Gas-fired generation has reduced Queensland’s carbon foot print by more than 10 per cent compared to NSW and we want Governments to  recognise the important contribution gas-fired generation can make as an interim solution until clean coal or other technologies mature”  Mr Pittlik said.

The interstate pipeline would be 900km long and cost $500million to build.

The pipeline would transport and store gas from prospective coal seam gas fields in Queensland, which would not only secure electricity generation in NSW but would also  increase competition between gas suppliers in NSW and help keep electricity prices low.

The interstate pipeline is planned to traverse the Gunnedah Basin and Narrabri where the prospects of finding coal seam gas are increasing.

“Prospects for finding a major coal seam gas resource are high and could lead to the creation of a gas industry including LNG terminals at Newcastle,” Mr Pittlik said.
